All About The Ailments – Fibromyalgia

All About The Ailments – Fibromyalgia

We’d like to welcome you to the second installment of our latest series called,  “All About The Ailments.” We’ve partnered with OhioMedicalMarijuana.com to discuss and spotlight each of the qualifying medical ailments that cannabis has been approved to treat in the state of Ohio.

This week we will be covering Fibromyalgia, how cannabis helps treat it, and what patients are saying about how cannabis helps them.

What Is Fibromyalgia

“Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals.”

How Does Medical Marijuana Help Alleviate Fibromyalgia Pain?

According to OhioMarijuanaCard.com, “Medical marijuana, which refers to the smoked version of the drug instead of cannabis, has been shown to help relieve pain, muscle stiffness, insomnia, and other symptoms associated with fibromyalgia.

One study of fibromyalgia patients, published in the journal PLoS One, found that medical marijuana not only helped relieve their physical symptoms, but it also helped with their mental well-being and overall feelings of wellness.

Beyond pain symptoms, medical marijuana is also suggested to some patients with fibromyalgia because it contains compounds that help provide relief from nausea. The cannabinoid chemicals that occur naturally in the body are stimulated by the THC in medical marijuana. This helps to activate the brain’s reward system and lower pain levels. It can also help to improve the areas of the brain associated with memory and coordination.”

What The Patient Has To Say
We interviewed a Medical Marijuana patient from Ohio who gave us insight on how cannabis has helped her treat her Fibromyalgia. She said, “My name is Trudy Egan, I’m 57 years old and was diagnosed with severe fibromyalgia 11 years ago.  I’ve been through it all, all the specialists, all the tests and ALL the medications! I was going to pain management but they loaded me down with pain medication.  I was completely unable to function I was so over medicated. My family doctor helped me get weaned off of all the opiates and by the Grace of God, I do not have an addictive personality.   I still am on a low dose of Lyrica and Cymbalta but instead of opiates I now take CBD oil every day and have become a Medical Marijuana patient. Your kind of on your own in Ohio to figure out what is the most effective for you.  I am still trying new things but Medical Marijuana has given me my life back! At night I use an Indica high in CBD. It takes away the pain and relaxes enough to sleep. I usually don’t use marijuana during the day unless I have a high pain day. I have a very high tolerance to pain but if needed during the day a couple of hits of a good Sativa that is high in THC makes me pain-free and gives me energy.  I thank God every day for creating the marijuana plant that literally has given me my life back!”

As time goes on, more and more research is coming out about how cannabis can help treat ailments like Fibromyalgia. Has it helped you? Let us know your story in the comments below!

Until then, stay informed and be kind.
